Revisiting the top 30 prospects of 2005 (via Baseball America)

1. Joe Mauer, c, Twins
2009 AL MVP has progressed and succeeded just as everyone foresaw.
2. Felix Hernandez, rhp, Mariners
King Felix showed flashes of potential until unleashing his talent with a strong '09
3. Delmon Young, of, Devil Rays
after being traded to Minnesota, Young has found a niche in the Twin's system.
4. Ian Stewart, 3b, Rockies
versatile infielder who hits for above-average power in homer-heaven Colorado
5. Joel Guzman, ss, Dodgers

never caught on as Furcal's successor and is struggling to stick with a team
6. Casey Kotchman, 1b, Angels
top-tier fielder, good contact hitter has relocated several times in the last couple years
7. Scott Kazmir, lhp, Devil Rays
has streaks where he is unhittable, then goes through slumps. Talent is undeniable.
8. Rickie Weeks, 2b, Brewers
Mike Cameron-type power, Ryan Howard-like strikeout numbers
9. Andy Marte, 3b, Braves
finally found a spot as a utility player in Cleveland
10. Hanley Ramirez, ss, Red Sox
best shortstop in the Majors, only reason people attend Marlins games
11. Lastings Milledge, of, Mets
egotistical big-shot that couldn't make it in New York, and is just getting by in D.C.
12. Dallas McPherson, 3b, Angels
reduced to the role of pinch-hitter, will most likely never be a starter
13. Matt Cain, rhp, Giants
most underrated pitcher in the majors, success overshadowed by Lincecum
14. Jeff Francoeur, of, Braves
Rickie Weeks outfield edition
15. Prince Fielder, 1b, Brewers
often overlooked, but in contention with Ryan Howard for best power in AL.
16. Adam Miller, rhp, Indians
hasn't thrown a pitch in the majors, probably never will
17. Jason Kubel, of, Twins
breakout '09 where he hit .300, 28 homers, and 103 RBI as the Twins DH.
18. Jeremy Hermida, of, Marlins
not very accomplished, traded to the Bosox this offseason.
19. Chad Billingsley, rhp, Dodgers
arguably the ace of a very good rotation in Los Angeles
20. Jeff Niemann, rhp, Devil Rays
good '09 season with 13 wins and a sub 4 ERA
21. Brian Dopirak, 1b, Cubs
WHO?????????
22. Carlos Quentin, of, Diamondbacks
Great '08 season with 30+ homers, 100+ RBI, but struggled with injuries in '09
23. Jeff Francis, lhp, Rockies
has had a mix of good and bad times as the most consistent pitcher in Colorado
24. Nick Swisher, of, Athletics
situational player who was one of the original "Moneyball" draft picks
25. Jose Capellan, rhp, Brewers
100 mph heat hasn't brought Cappelan to superstardom
26. Chris Nelson, ss, Rockies
still considered a top prospect for the Rockies (only 24 years old)
27. Ryan Howard, 1b, Phillies
one of the most feared hitters in Majors; 40 homers in every season but his rookie year
28. J.J. Hardy, ss, Brewers
broke out in 2008, fluctuated between majors and minors in 2009
29. Mike Hinckley, lhp, Nationals
nothing more than a middle reliever here.
30. Edwin Jackson, rhp, Dodgers
couldn't succeed in Los Angeles, but flourished in Tampa and Detroit.

  1. The only reason Howard didn't have 40 homers his rookie campaign was because he played half the season, and still won the rookie of the year.
